Team Glic fly the flag for Scottish Engineering

Last weekend an ‘all new’ Glic team travelled to Bristol to compete in the Institution of Engineering and Technology First Lego League UK and Ireland final for robotics. Glic embarked on their journey to Bristol with high hopes, but also with a real nervousness about walking in the footsteps of last year’s winning World Championship team from Wallace Hall Academy who had the advantage of being older and more experienced.

Although team Glic were pipped for the overall UK First LEGO League Robotics crown this time by a well-established team from near Bath, they were delighted to be announced as Scotland’s top team. This means that our small rural school will be flying the flag for Scotland at the World Championships in Detroit, USA, from 24th to 27th April 2019 for an unprecedented second year in succession.

Glic will be competing with the top 108 from 34,000 teams from across the world, and they are hoping to do as well as last year's team. Once again members of the team are promoting equality in engineering - Glic again contains more girls than boys. This year's theme is all about space and the event is being sponsored by NASA, Google and numerous other tech giants from across the globe.

In order to achieve their goal of representing Scotland in Detroit, in excess of £15.000 has to be raised to cover flights, accommodation, travel, food, registration etc. As well as hoping for financial support from parents, IET and sponsors, Glic are trying to take a slightly different approach this year in the lead up to the World Championships and would like to get the whole community involved. They plan to visit all of the local shops and businesses to see if they will display the Glic logo and messages of support with the aim of getting the whole community behind team Glic.

Team Glic members are: Olivia Andreasen, Alex Bramley, Emily Cochran, Sorcha Corrigan, Abi Fletcher, John McKay and Luke McKay. Glic would like to thank Anderson Kilts for their outfits for the UK and Ireland finals and everyone else who has supported the team in their journey.
