Rotary Young Photographer

Two Wallace Hall Academy pupils were delighted to be presented with framed pictures of their winning entries in the Rotary Young Photographer competition.

Gregor Black and Iona Menzies were chosen as the top two photographers earlier this year in the Thornhill and District heat of the Rotary Young Photographer.  It was a lovely surprise when Rotarian Keith Shedden dropped into school recently to present them with their prize.

Iona said:  “I am very happy to have won the Intermediate section of the Thornhill heat of the Rotary Young Photographer and I am thrilled to be given the framed photo as my prize.  This will encourage me to try other artistic projects in the future.”  Gregor, winner of the senior section, added: “I am also delighted with my framed photograph.  Studying Higher Photography last year really helped me with the skills required to make a good photograph and these skills will be transferable when I start my new furniture making course at City of Glasgow College in the autumn.”

After presenting the pupils with their photographs Keith commented:  “I am delighted to hand over these framed photographs to Iona and Gregor as worthy winners of our Young Photographer competition.  The club was very pleased with the standard of entries this year.  We are fortunate to have an excellent relationship with both our secondary schools and enjoy working with pupils and staff from both Wallace Hall Academy and Sanquhar Academy in all of the different competitions the Rotary Club offer during the academic session.  We also enjoy working together with the schools in the annual interview programme, helping prepare students for life beyond school.”

Vickie Simpson, PT Expressive Arts at Wallace Hall, said:  “The Rotary Young Photographer is a fantastic competition that allows our creative pupils to showcase their talents.  It is a lovely touch that the winners have been given a framed print and certificate to reward their efforts. We would like to thank Keith and the members of Thornhill Rotary Club for their support and we look forward to building on our participation next session.”
