A taste of coffee

On Monday 17th June, a group of our pupils were visited by Lorna McDonald from Miko Coffee in East Kilbride. She provided initial training for our budding Baristas on how to use our coffee machine to make an array of different beverages as part of our new and exciting Barista Project.

With funding from the Prince’s Trust, Holywood Trust and DYW, our Barista group will aim to set up and run a successful coffee shop within the school.

They will also undergo formal training later in the year on site at the East Kilbride branch of Miko Coffee where they will hopefully gain a City & Guilds qualification in Barista skills. The aim of the project is to provide those pupils with invaluable employability skills while developing their confidence, communication and customer service skills.

The pupils thoroughly enjoyed Lorna’s visit, Ryan Ferguson said: “The Barista experience gave us all a good taste into the world of coffee” and Nicole Dickson added: “I was nervous to begin with but I’m now excited to develop my skills”. Our budding Baristas are now feeling enthused for the next step in the process which includes a visit to Largs Printing Company to help them brand their new business.

I think Lewis Brown spoke for them all when he said: “I am now on my first steps to becoming a professional Barista”.
