In Fine Voice

Wallace Hall pupils were in fine voice at the Speech section of Perform in Dumfries held in Dumfries Academy on Friday 1st and Saturday 2nd March. Organised by the committee of the Dumfries and District Music Festival, the competition encourages young people to stand up in public and recite a piece of poetry or prose, teaching them valuable presentation skills which will be beneficial to the young person in later life.

Eight pupils from Wallace Hall stepped on to the stage to deliver their prepared pieces: Ailsa Black (S5), Emily Kennedy (S6), Hannah Kate Fisher (S3), Angus MacCormick (S1), John McKay (S4), Luke McKay (S4), Bailie Paterson (S3) and Muirinn White (S2). The standard of performance over the whole weekend was extremely high and Wallace Hall pupils won many of the senior classes including Bible Reading S1 – S3 (Angus MacCormick), Bible Reading S4 – S6 (John McKay), Poetry S4 – S6 (Luke McKay), Poetry: Own Composition (Luke McKay), War Poetry S4 – S6 (Ailsa Black), Scots Verse S4 – S6 (Emily Kennedy), Duologue S4 – S6 (John & Luke McKay), Prose S1 – S3 (Muirinn White), Prose S4 – S6 (Luke McKay) and Sight Reading S4 – S6 (Luke McKay). Adjudicators Jim Gibson and Brian Marjoriebanks were both very encouraging to all of the competitors, taking time to offer praise as well as acknowledging the high standard delivered in all of the sections.

John Blair, Acting Head Teacher at Wallace Hall, said: “Perform in Dumfries is an excellent platform for young people to hone their performance skills to give them confidence as they progress through their education and beyond. Many of the topics covered and skills required really enhance our young people’s broad general education and I am pleased that so many pupils from Wallace Hall chose to enter the competition. Well done to them all.”
