Bronze Reading Award

The English Department at Wallace Hall Academy works very closely with the Library to encourage literacy. All S1 pupils spend one of their English periods each week working on the Reading Award Scheme, progressing through Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum levels.

John Docherty, one of the English staff at Wallace Hall Academy, said: There are few things more satisfying than seeing a child completely lost in a book. The Reading Award scheme encourages more and more children to lose themselves in literature. English Teacher Jamie Pape added: The Reading Awards play a huge part in our pupils first year at Wallace Hall Academy and encourage both reading and critical thinking. Many pupils achieve the Silver Award with some making it on to try the Gold or Platinum but all feel a sense of pride in what they accomplish.

Book Reviews & Recommendations

Pupils are encouraged to recommend books they have enjoyed by submitting a book review to Mrs Menzies. This can be done by simply handing the review to Mrs Menzies or by completing an electronic book review through Eclipse, the LRC data management programme. Book reviews are also displayed on the board in the quiet reading corner of the LRC.

The LRC is very much at the centre of our school with a number of clubs and activities being held there including the Warhammer Club and the Chess Club.

Pupils from Wallace Hall Primary School access the LRC on a fortnightly basis and are allowed to borrow books up to three books each.
